Ooooh. I hope that the lovely moderator of fuckinghannibal doesn’t mind, but this got me thinking. And by thinking, I mean speculating wildly and irresponsibly and kind of backing it up maybe?
I think a lot can possibly be read into the fact that Hannibal takes (even) more care with his appearance when he goes to see Dr. Du Maurier. In 1.07, she refers to the ”meticulous construction” of his “very well-tailored person suit,” and I see two potential ways to tie his groomed-beyond-normal-Hannibal-levels appearance into that.
Du Maurier arguably sees Hannibal a lot more clearly than the rest of the characters (with a possibly exception of Will and Lass, but given that Lass is currently out of the picture and Will is as of the last episode still not consciously connecting the dots, I’m gonna disregard those two). At the very least, she knows that he’s a big faker, and has no problem calling him on it. Given that, it might make sense for Hannibal to feel a bit — well, insecure is the wrong word, because I’m not sure Hannibal has those feels. However, it might make him feel the need to conceal himself even further behind his “human veil,” to compensate for a certain level of mental/emotional visibility by adding another layer of polish to his physical camouflage of being the perfect, pristine, civilized man. We see with Will that Hannibal seems to struggle with the conflicting desires to be seen and to not have people realize that he eats people, and I think that this could be another version of those contradictory desires: “I’ll come to you for therapy, something that by its nature is very revealing, but I’ll make sure that my mask is even more firmly in place than it usually is.”
The other possibility is that, knowing that she views him as a person suit, he’s decided to play into that assumption, and him showing up better groomed than usual is another way of making sure that she sees exactly what he wants her to see; that is to say, the mask is more firmly in place because that’s part of his performance, and he has, for whatever reason, allowed her to see as much as she has.
Beyond either of those theories, and this feels like a bit of a reach, I think it’s possible that he, on some level, wants to impress her. He’s expressed the desire to be friends with her and he’s admitted to feeling “protective” of her. Hannibal being Hannibal, there’s no telling how honest either of those sentiments are, but I’d argue that he at the very least holds her in some regard. She, herself, says that Hannibal wants to see if someone can climb over the walls he’s put up; to a certain extent, she seems to have done this, because even if she doesn’t see any of what he’s concealing (and given that she’s such a mystery herself, the jury might still be out on that one), she still recognizes that he’s concealing something. Like, a lot of something, showing her only “a version of [him].” Hannibal has enough of an ego that he would want someone he respects — especially since the category of people he offers genuine respect of any kind is pretty limited — to think that he’s well turned out.
Okay, I feel like that was somewhat garbled and I really shouldn’t be trying to sense make at the end of the work day, so this is where I check out.
