Early life-cast concept work, by Kazuhiro Tsuji
Makeup Artist Halloween IssueIn this issue, Makeup Artist talks about how the makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji (Kazu for short) transformed Gordon Levitt with makeup, a task that initially seemed impossible as the two actors had very different facial features and looked nothing like. You can read about how makeup and prosthetics was used to transform JGL into Bruce Willis, it’s pretty interesting. Joe had to sit through 3 hours every morning of make up. Kazu has worked in the art department of many major films, such as Planet of the Apes and The Nutty Professor 2.
Some quotes from the article:
The task of turning the then-30-year-old Gordon-Levitt into a reasonable facsimile l of Willis fell to Kazuhiro Tsuji, who designed and built the make-up, and Jamie Kelman, who applied that make-up on set for the entire shoot. That task sounded so daunting that Tsuji nearly turned down the job. “Joseph contacted me in May of 2010,” he recalls, ”but when I heard that the older actor was going to be Bruce Willis and they basically needed a likeness make-up to make them look like each other, my brain sort of stopped, because they didn’t look anything like each other.”“It was probably a two-hour-and-15-minute to two-and-a-half hour make-up, and because Joseph had to shave every morning, he didn’t want to have to wake up any earlier after acting all day, so we made that part of the process, so it became two hours and 45 minutes.“The biggest reason I took this job was because I really respect Joseph as an actor,” says Tsuji, “and because I didn’t want to disappoint him. I wanted to do my best to make it work.
